CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Jack threw open the door and stomped toward Ray. The alarm on his friend’s face was obvious. Ray stepped back as Jack neared, pinning him against the window. Jack stared hard into his eyes for a long moment, taking long and deep breaths, forcing himself to calm down. Did Ray think he was going to be the next thing his fist met? The way Jack felt, that was an option.

His friend had betrayed him, and along with discovering the city had a serial killer, and that his family was in some way tied to it, it was all he could do to keep his fists at his sides.

Ray wasn’t afraid, but perhaps a bit intimidated from the way he stared back with equal determination. Ray’s back stiffened, as if trying to gain some extra height to match Jack’s more imposing stature.

"Hola to you too, amigo." Ray’s sarcastic tone matched the crease between his eyes.

Finally, Jack spoke between clenched teeth. "How could you keep this from me?" His blood pressure pulsed in his ears. "Why didn’t you tell me? Goddammit, Ray, why didn’t you tell me?"

"Tell you what?" Ray looked completely confused.

Without speaking, Jack grabbed Ray’s jacket collar, feeling his friend flinch for the first time in all the years he’d known him, and practically dragged the man into the backroom. He faced Ray toward the murder wall and brusquely released him.

Ray had never been in the backroom before. He stood in the center of the room—the only clean spot where Jack had sat earlier—and watched while Ray spun, taking everything in. Ray’s gaze lingered on Jack’s family wall, and then the Boyds’ before it finally rested on the murder wall. It didn’t take him long to realize what Jack had.

"What the fuck, Jack? Where did you get all this? It looks like you’ve got exact duplicates of our files." Ray’s voice held an accusatory tone.

"It doesn’t matter. What does matter is you didn’t tell me the city is hunting a serial killer. And a sick fucker at that." When Ray opened his mouth to speak, Jack continued. "Yeah, I know about the excarnations. Don’t lay it on me that it’s because I’m no longer on the force. You tell me everything. Why keep this from me?"

Ray stepped toward the wall and looked over Jack’s handiwork. "We didn’t realize it ourselves until last year. The department agreed to keep it strictly in-house until we had a better handle on it."

"Yeah, I know. You didn’t want a media frenzy or city-wide panic. I get it. But this has been going on for three years now. For fuck sake, Ray, I was at Spreckels Lake when the last victim was discovered. You could have told me that night when you were here. Why didn’t you?"

Ray spun around, blurting out, "I couldn’t, okay? Haniford has all of our huevos in a vice about this. You don’t think I’m afraid for Maria? She fits the MO and I can’t even tell her. I want
